Andrew Storer, CEO of the Nuclear AMRC, welcomes the UK’s new energy minister:

We congratulate Ed Miliband on his appointment as Secretary of State at DESNZ, and look forward to helping deliver the new government’s ambitious plans to power the UK with secure, low-carbon energy.

We will continue working with our industry partners to support the new government’s priorities to progress new nuclear power stations such as Sizewell C and build a fleet of small modular reactors. With Great British Nuclear now driving the delivery of the UK’s future nuclear programmes, we hope that the plan to fold it into the new Great British Energy will not cause any delays to its vital mission.

The nuclear sector is the key not only to our energy security, but also to jobs, investment, and opportunities for communities and businesses across the country. To achieve the most economic value, we need to continue to develop our manufacturing supply chain and maximise UK content for these huge infrastructure investments.

We also welcome the new MPs representing major nuclear development sites including Hinkley, Sizewell, Wylfa and West Burton. These opportunities represent tens of thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of investment in local communities, and we will work with these MPs to ensure that they can best support their communities and benefit from the new government’s priorities.
